is the art of communicating with a particular audience in order to accomplish specific outcomes and goals. These desired outcomes can vary from person to the next. Persuasive speaking maybe a person that wants his or her audience to take an action such as buying a product or it may be a person who wants to change another person’s existing beliefs about a subject.

No matter what your specific goals are, the fact is persuasive speaking can help you reach them. At the core of persuasion is change and without that change, there is essence no persuasion and, influence is impossible to achieve.

When we persuade someone, we are introducing a specific change into the equation and a person who effectively uses persuasive speech is able to reduce or eliminate natural resistance that people have toward change.

Humans were designed to fight and resist change because change threatens the existing balance of people’s lives. Our ancient ancestors learned very early on that change can cause many problems. Furthermore, they believed change should be resisted because it’s better to adapt to current conditions rather than having to deal with new variables and unwanted conditions.

The Art of Persuasion

Persuasive speech, or simply put persuasion, is a type of communication in which change at a personal or group level is introduced. The truth is, the art of persuasion can be learned by anyone, which is why it is the perfect time for you too to learn the secrets of persuasive speech yourself.

Why is persuasion important you ask? Well people typically move through life with a specific purpose and we are always working toward specific life and career goals. These goals will be that much easier to achieve if you are able to persuade people. Imagine being able to realize the manifestation of your goals through just simple persuasive speech.

Best of all persuasive speech can be used by anyone in any field. Doesn’t matter if you are a doctor, salesman, lawyer, or teacher, persuasive speech will provide you with great benefits. Another great thing about persuasion is that it is actually a skill that can be learned.

Just like any other skill, the art of persuasion can be taught and can be learned as well. You can practice persuasion on a daily basis so you can eventually master it because the more you practice persuasive speech, the better you become, it’s that simple. The more time you put into learning persuasive speech, the better your results will be.

Effective persuasion will require your personal mastery of the skill, but also your ability to set intentions. Persuasion without any intention is the same as driving without a destination in mind. The first thing that you need before you can become persuasive is to have a particular intention or goal in mind. Why do you want to persuade the other person in the first place? What do you want to achieve with persuasion?

Once you have identified your intentions or goals, you can then proceed to shaping the persuasive component of your argument. How will you be able to introduce the change you seek without meeting any resistance? How will you go about framing your argument so that the other person will see things from your point of view? These are only a few of the things that you will learn from your own study of persuasive speech.

Speeches On Persuasion

When talking about a speeches on persuasion there are three basic elements that need to be included in order for it to be truly persuasive. Those three things are: Logic, compassion, and Ethical. A truly compelling speech must be logical according to the ears of the listener, show compassion, and also be ethical in content. Miss any of those three and you will miss the mark.

Let’s look at each component. Being logical means that one needs to begin with the end in mind. What I mean by that is the speaker needs to answer the following question. What do I want my audience to know or learn as a result of my speech? It is important to have a clear end result of your speech. Then, tell your story by making sure your points follow a logical path from start to finish. This becomes easy when you know what your audiences’ level of knowledge is a particular subject. You then will want to fill in the blanks to lead them to your conclusion.

Take the example of a “road trip.” You set out for a destination and we have a map and route planned from start to finish. You follow the main roads and then decide to take an off ramp for whatever reason, or tell a side story during your speech. After completing the side story, make sure you get back on the main road to reach our destination. This same approach applies to the speech.

Next, compassion will often come in two forms; The first is your passion for the subject and the other is the acceptance by your audience of your plan or proposal. If you believe your speech will have a positive impact on the audience then your enthusiasm will and must show it. The second part, having your audience accept your proposal, is not as difficult as you might imagine. It is not difficult if you prepare your speech by thinking about what the benefit will be to your audience.Your speech should then clearly point out the benefits to the audience.

One tip I suggest when creating content and that is less is more. Don’t overdo it with your audience by talking about too many points or by presenting too much data. Your speech needs to concise but don’t try and re-invent the wheel. My rule of thumb for the optimum number of points in a speech is five. Any more than five points and the audience will not remember any more than that nor will they try. It is also important to align your points with the most important point put first and the least important point last. Doing this will keep up the momentum of your speech and at the same time hold the attention of your audience.

Finally, there is the ethical component. By definition, anything that is ethical is true, of high moral or a right of good conduct. For a speech to be ethical your proposition must be truthful meaning it will provide benefits in which you are proposing. Secondly, the audience needs to see the benefits and know that these benefits are real. The best opportunity to do this is to use examples or even true stories to prove your point. Again, make sure not to go overboard here.

A truly persuasive speech should have a strong opening that alerts your audience to the major benefits to your proposal. Then it should be followed up by a logical flow in the body and stress the benefits of your plan. Your plan should be provided in five points or less. Finally, the summary will paraphrase your points and then you close with a strong closing statement. If you have crafted your speech well and showed the benefits to your audience and presented it with passion, then a strong statement at the end will be the perfect finish to a perfect speech.

The Skill of Persuasive Speaking

Persuasion is the conscious use of communication with the end goal being the introduction of change. Your very words can in fact be used to introduce change so that you will accomplish specific outcomes. This is where we begin our own exploration of the topic persuasive speech.

When you are just learning about persuasive speech, you have to keep in mind that persuasiveness is achieved by mastering the skill of persuasive speaking itself. So if you want to be a master of persuasion, you must hone your skills by practicing, practicing, and then practicing some more. There are simply no shortcuts in the world of persuasion and therefore the earlier you start, the better off you will be in the end.

Categories of thoughts

Before you can persuade someone to agree with something or to do something for you, you have to understand how human thoughts are arranged. Understanding this will allow you to better sort through all the different information that you have in front of you in an effort to formulate better arguments. Formulating better arguments will only help you when you need to persuade another person because human thoughts are thought to be generally divided into the following categories:

- Long standing beliefs

- Core beliefs

- Hard facts

- Valuation systems

Long standing beliefs would include a person’s beliefs regarding subjects like science, religion, and politics just to name a few. These beliefs are closely held because an argument was made for each belief in the past. A person will often accumulate these beliefs through various ways such as social contact, reading books and watching television.

Core beliefs, on the other hand, are the essential beliefs that people hold on to no matter what.

Hard facts are bits of information accumulated from life experiences.

Valuation systems are categories that most people use for people, places, and situations (i.e. computer geniuses are all good with programming computers). As you can see, each category of thought has a different nature and none of these categories of thought are easy to bend or modify.

For example, it would be really hard to convince people that they should not vote anymore because the structure of voting is not really democratic. If you tried to make that argument you would be met with so much resistance that you most likely would not be able to persuade anyone.

The secret to persuasion

One myth that simply is not true is the thought you can effectively persuade anyone by just changing what they know. If this were true, convincing anyone to believe in anything would be a challenge because our arguments would have to change what people know and that is not realistic.

Here is a little known secret to the art of persuasion. You don’t have to change what people know but rather, just have to change how they view the world. By changing a person’s perspective and their valuation of a subject becomes easier than trying to change what he or she already knows.

So if you are trying to persuade someone, make sure that focus on changing their point of view, rather than the information that they know. You can’t try to replace Fact A with Fact B. What you want to do is tell the person that Fact B is more desirable than Fact A because of Reason A, B, C and so on.

Persuasion Topics: Win Over Your Audience

The art of persuasion is all about getting people to change their minds about something or to convince them that your opinion is the right one. Often people may not realize how many times throughout your day you are faced with a persuasive topic and recognizing it and reacting accordingly can have huge benefits.

Persuasive topics often come in the form of advertisements such as print ads, television ads, infomercials, etc. All of these ads are asking you to believe in a certain idea or concept. The important part of a seller’s action is their ability to set their intentions. So why do they want to persuade people in the first place and what do they hope to achieve?

These same persuasion techniques can now be applied in your own daily life as well, you see persuasion is a type of communication that aims to introduce change. Persuasion can also be applied in many different areas of your life.

Whatever your intentions are, whether you would like to get a raise in your career, make your yearly sales goals, convince a salesperson to give you thirty percent off a particular item, or just to have your choice of food for dinner, you can apply persuasion.

Once you have the focus of your intention, in other words what you hope to achieve you can start molding the persuasive component of your argument. Think about this: how can you possibly introduce a change without facing the resistance of your audience? You can’t. Here is another question to ask yourself. How will you state your point of view in order for the other person to understand your concept?

It is important to remember to understand the state of mind along with the emotional state of the person you are communicating with; doing this can be a huge advantage. People will usually act upon their emotions as emotions do play a major role in persuasion. Once you can tap into your audience’s emotional mindset, they will rarely use their critical faculty. So try not to focus too much on just the facts and figures because your goal is to get your audience to accept you and trust you. When your audience accepts you and trusts you they will become comfortable with the ideas that you’re handing out.

Persuasion is not something that happens instantly but rather it is often subtle within the context of normal conversation. Whatever the topic, be sure and repeat your message to give your audience the time to process it. This will allow them to respond to you before a change can occur. With a clear message, your target can and should fully understand your ideas.

It is also important to keep your cool which will help you stay in control when you are using persuasion within a conversation. You cannot allow your current mood to dictate how the conversation plays out. Make sure that you are honest with the person or people you are talking with but avoid being vulnerable or overly sincere. Nervousness will often cause your audience to be uninterested and more likely to resist what you are saying so try and stay calm. Furthermore, aggressiveness will often trigger a person’s or group’s “fight or flight” response. You can reduce this by being patient and taking things slowly. Patience will allow you to get your point across with less resistance.

Most important to understand is that learning to use persuasion in every area of your life is a skill and just like anything else, in order to be really good at something, you need to practice, practice and practice some more. When you can successfully change the way a person feels about something then you will officially leave arguing in the past and You’ll become a more successful person because you can better get your ideas across to others.
